Mattson Named President of Northpointe Institute for Public Management

Founder Dave Wells to Remain CEO and Lead Technology Innovations

Dr. Brian Mattson has been named president of Northpointe Institute for Public Management, Northpointe founder and CEO Dave Wells announced this week.

Mattson has been with the criminal justice consulting firm since 2007, serving as its vice president of operations and leading its consulting services division. Before joining Northpointe, Mattson provided consulting services to the Child Welfare League of America, National Institute of Corrections and other leader agencies in the human services, adult and juvenile justice fields. He also served as the director of the Children, Youth and Families and Criminal Justice Planning divisions of Jefferson County, Colorado, which is one of the largest urban counties in the state.

“Dr. Mattson has a unique combination of science, practice and policy experience, and I look forward to the leadership he brings to the company and to the success of our clients,” Wells said. “This transition will allow us to grow our products and services while ensuring our clients receive the attention and quality of support they deserve.”

Wells will remain chairman and CEO of the company he founded in 1989. He will also lead the development of new technology products to support better decision-making in the criminal justice field.  In addition to its consulting and training services, Northpointe is nationally recognized for developing and implementing software to guide offender assessment, classification and case management decisions based on best practices in the field.

Mattson’s appointment comes in the midst of a prolonged period of growth for the company, which serves more than 200 agencies across the United States and Canada. As public agencies throughout the criminal justice field face budget shortfalls and other challenges, Northpointe will focus on developing new products and services to support more cost-effective management and increase public safety.

“Many of our clients are courageously implementing needed criminal justice reforms, despite the fiscal challenges they face,” Mattson said. “As our company moves forward, our overriding aim is to be partners with our clients to produce better outcomes for our communities and the people within our public systems, while making the best possible use of scarce taxpayer dollars.”

As president, Mattson will oversee the day-to-day operations of the company, lead the development of new consulting and training services and provide strategic direction for the organization.  He holds a doctorate in sociology and criminology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master’s degree in criminology from the University of Maryland at College Park.
