Northpointe was recently awarded a National Institute of Corrections Cooperative Agreement to develop a document entitled “A guide to Developing a Jail Information System”.
Information systems involve the complex interaction of people, data and processes that turn data into useful knowledge in support of the operational needs of an organization. There are various types of information systems relevant for jails including transaction processing systems, decision support systems, knowledge management systems and database management systems. The overall objective of this project is to examine these diverse needs and develop a document that gives jail administrators, operational staff, technical support staff, criminal justice agencies and other stakeholders a guide for assessing the management information needs and implementation processes of a jail in support of decision making and monitoring procedures across all levels of facility and system’s operations. As jail information technology evolves and these systems become “smarter” these systems, if properly designed, implemented and utilized, have the potential to significantly improve the access and quality of data critical to “Running an Intelligent Jail”.
